So You Want to Deep Fry a Turkey with a Turkey Deep Fryer?

I guess it is important to learn how to do this properly. Deep frying something like a turkey can seem a little out of the ordinary. I know that the first time I had it i was a little surprised. I thought it would be greasy and crispy, but surprisingly it was moist and tender.

Due to the way that you actually do the deep frying, this is something that you have to do outside. Typically oil or gas is used to provide the heat and that isn't something that you want to do on the outside.

How Much Oil Do I Need?

Before you actually start to cook the bird, you have to know exactly how much oil you're going to need. Adding a big bird into a pot can be hard to determine how much oil you'll need. The best way to go is put the turkey in the pot and fill it up with water to a few inches above the turkey. Now you just remove the turkey and the level the water is at should be the same for the oil.

Starting to Deep Fry a Turkey

Your actual deep fryer should come with a candy thermometer, which you're going to have to watch. You want to make sure that you get the temperature up to 325-350F. You don't want to go any higher. Achieving these temperatures will take you about 20-30 minutes, so be patient.

Once you reach the right temperature all you have to do is put the turkey in the basket and slowly lower it into the pot. You lower it slowly because the hot oil can be volatile and can bubble up fast. Just lower it slowly, so you don't end up burning yourself.

The cooking time on the actual turkey is quite fast, which is a lot shorter than cooking it in an oven. I can't give you an exact time on it because it is all dependent on the size of your turkey. Typically the rule is that you cook it three minutes for every pound.

What NOT To Do!

As you should be doing the things above, there are a few things that you shouldn't be doing because there is really no way of doing it.

First, don't stuff your turkey with anything. I know we like to have stuffing with our turkey, but when you deep fry it you just can't do it. It won't work, it'll create a mess and there is really know what to know how safe it is to eat.

Secondly, don't leave the pot alone while it is cooking and even heating. We're talking about hot oil here. Someone could get easily hurt if you're not paying attention. You could literally over cook your turkey and ruin thanksgiving. There are a million reasons why it is bad to leave the cooking unattended.

Lastly, let the oil cool before you store it or get rid of it. This is how you deep fry a turkey and you have to properly take care of this.
